가을의 대표적인 꽃이자 흔히들 들국화로 칭하는 감국.

국내에서는 산에 피는 산국과 들에 피는 감국 2가지 종류가 있는데 생김새는 비슷해도 그 용도에는 차이가 있다.

이 중 감국은 단맛이 나는 국화라는 뜻으로 향기가 좋아 떡을 만들어 먹고 꽃을 말려 차로 우리거나, 술에 넣기도, 혹은 전을 부쳐서 먹기도 한다.

반면 산국은 감국에 비해 쓴맛이 강하고 향이 약해 주로 증기로 찌거나 끓는 물에 데쳐서 말린후 약재로 사용한다.

이 둘을 구분하는 방법은 꽃 크기로, 감국의 꽃이 산국보다 1.5배 가량 크다. 예를 들자면 감국은 500원짜리 동정, 산국은 50원짜리 동전이다.

또 하나의 특징은 감국 꽃과는 달리 산국은 우산 모양처럼 덩이를 이뤄 핀다는 점이다.

예로부터 감국과 산국은 몸을 가볍게 하고 혈기를 좋게 하며, 위와 장을 편안하게 한다고 한다.

또한 두통, 감기, 어지럼증 등에 효능이 있어 말려서 차로 먹는 방법 등으로 민간에 대표적인 상비약재로 쓰여져왔다.

또한 비타민A 성분이 많아 눈 충혈, 결막염 등 눈질환에도 효과가 있다.

최근에는 감국이 함유하고 있는 성분 중 아파게닌, 루테오린, 아카세틴 등에 주목하고 있다. 항염과 항산화, 면역 증진 등에 탁월하기 때문이다.

더욱이 감국 추출물은 미국 비영리 환경단체에서 화장품 안정성에 대해 분류한 기준인 EWG안정등급에서도 1등급인 그린 등급으로 인채에 무해하다고 확인되고 있다.

감국( Dendranthema indicum (L.) Des Moul.)

과명 : 국화과

영명 : Indian dendranthema

이명 : 국화, 들국화, 선감국, 황국

일본명 : ハマカンギク

감국은 국화과의 여러해살이 초본식물이다. 크기는 높이 30~80cm이며, 잎은 어긋나고 난상 원형으로 길이 3~5cm, 나비 2.5~4cm이며 우상으로 깊게 갈라지고 정렬편은 크며 끝이 둔하고 측렬편은 타원형 또는 장 타원형으로 가장자리에 톱니가 있으며 엽병은 길이 1~2cm이다. 꽃은 10∼11월에 황색으로 피고 향기가 좋다. 가지와 줄기 끝에 산방상으로 달리며 머리모양꽃차례의 지름은 2.5cm 정도이다. 총포는 길이 5~6mm이고 화편은 4열로 배열하며 외편은 작고 달걀모양 또는 장 타원형으로 등에 털이 있다. 과실은 수과로 길이 1.6mm이고 5개의 줄이 있다. 줄기는 모여나기하며 하부는 쓰러져 땅에 닿으나 끝은 서로 보통 자흑색을 띠며 전주에 잔털이 있다. 근경은 옆으로 뻗어 끝에서 새싹이 생긴다.

전 세계적으로 중국, 대만, 일본에 분포하며, 우리나라에서는 황해도 이남의 전국에 분포한다. 제주도 지역에서는 해안 지역과 중산간 지역에서 흔하게 볼 수 있다. 본 종은 형태적 변이가 다양하여 원예품종 개발시에 유용한 유전자원으로서 이용될 수 있기 때문에 ‘국외반출 승인대상 생물자원’으로 지정되어 있다. 관상용으로 정원에 식재하며, 잎은 차로 쓰이고, 전체 식물체는 소염제 등의 약용으로 널리 쓰인다.

가을을 대표하는 식물로서 전국에 자라는 들국화의 일종으로 노란색 꽃이 달린 두상꽃차례가 가지의 끝에 많이 달리는 것이 특징이다. 이런 점에서 산국(Dendranthemum boreale (Makino) Ling ex. Kitam.)과 비슷하나 산국에 비해 바닷가에서 흔하게 자라며, 두상꽃차례의 지름이 약 2배 가까이 크고, 줄기는 아래쪽이 땅에 누우므로 구분된다. 또, 두상꽃차례가 산방상으로 배열되어 있어 꽃차례 무리가 역삼각형 모양인 점에서 구분된다.
